On 15th April, 1917, HMT Arcadian, as she was then known, was en route to Alexandria in  Egypt from Salonika in Greece when she was torpedoed by the German submarine UC-74 when 26 miles north-east of the Greek island of Milos. She had 1335 troops and crew aboard and sank within six minutes with the loss of 279 soldiers and sailors.
